Conflict in The Perks of Being a Wallflower is that
Charlie, the main character, is suicidal and has bad memories from when he was
a child. His childhood haunts him even in his teenage years.
Charlie does what he feels the person would like
him to do. He does not do what he knows is right. For example, when Patrick is
sad that Brad broke up with him, Patrick kissed Charlie to ease his pain.
Charlie allowed Patrick to kiss him because he wanted to be a good friend. But
Charlie was actually hurting Patrick because he was not being honest.
Charlie later dates a friend from his group, Mary
Elizabeth. He does not really like her but he does not break up with her
because he does not want to hurt her feelings. Conflict is presented in this
scene because of Charlie’s lack of understanding of communication. He does not
communicate well with Mary Elizabeth therefore it is obvious that their
relationship will not flourish.
